This t-shirt design commemorates the 40th Anniversary of Middlesbrough Borough Council's secret attempt to send the first brick built Victorian building to the moon.
It all happened in 1978 after 2:30pm on a Sunday in December when the pubs were shut and there was nobody around sober enough to be believed if they reported seeing tens of tons of masonry heading up into the firmament.
Middlehaven clock tower was selected for the project because, as one Councillor put it "it's a lot more aerodynamic than the Town Hall, like" and also, being Over The Border, would probably end up never being seen.
"Hang on, the clock tower's still there" you may say; and you would be right. That's because the launch only sent it about 300 feet into the air before the gas bottle powering the engines ran out and it fell back to earth, still perfectly intact but 8 inches to the north east of its original location.
